Q: My student was injured while participating in a UIL athletic event. Who do I need to contact about district insurance?

A: At the high school level, the campus athletic trainers will file district insurance claims for injuries that occur while participating in UIL athletics.  At the middle school level, the district’s Coordinator of Sports Medicine will file an insurance claim for middle school student athletes.  Please see the Athletic Training Staff page for contact information.

Q: I did not receive or cannot find a copy of the insurance claim form already filed by an athletic trainer. How do I receive another copy?

A: Please contact the athletic trainer that filed the form on your behalf. They will have a copy of the claim form to provide to you.

Q: I have medical bills from my student’s injury that occurred while participating in Irving ISD sports. Do I send them to the athletic department or the athletic trainer?

A: The district does not manage any bills or reimbursements for medical treatments. You should have received a copy of the claim form filed on your behalf which contains the contact information for the insurance company. Please contact the insurance company directly regarding all bills and reimbursements.

Q: My child sustained a concussion and is continuing to have symptoms that effect him/her in the classroom.  How can we help them return to school without making their symptoms worse?

A: Concussions are a brain injury that effect a student’s cognitive abilities. For this reason, Irving ISD has a Return to Learn protocol in place to assist athletes in the classroom that have lingering or significant symptoms. This protocol is communicated to your child’s counselor and teachers. If that protocol is not being followed in the classroom or you have questions regarding the protocol, please contact the athletic trainers.

Q: My student athlete was diagnosed with a concussion and was cleared to return to sports. Why is the athletic trainer continuing to withhold him/her from participation?

A: State law, HB 2038 governs how concussions are managed. Staff and students are required to follow the protocol set forth by state law and the district concussion oversight team.  One of the common issues seen is clearance by a nurse practitioner (NP or FNP) or physician assistant (PA).  For concussions, the law requires athletes diagnosed with a concussion to be cleared by a physician (MD or DO) only.

Q: My student athlete was injured while participating in athletics and the athletic trainers have referred them to a doctor.  What are my options for a referral?

A: The athletic trainers will provide referral options for you.  As the parent/guardian, it is your choice as to who you want your child to see. However, we highly recommend having your child seen by an orthopedic/sports medicine physician. They specialize in and are uniquely trained and qualified to manage athletic injuries.  Information for the Irving ISD Team Physicians are provided on the Team Physicians page.

Q: When attempting to complete the Rank One forms, it will not allow me to select the sport my student wants to play. How do I correct this?

A: It is likely that your child has already been placed on the roster by the coaches for that sport resulting in that sport to already be selected for you. You'll see sports already assigned by the coach listed just above the sport options.

Q: I am not able to complete the Rank One forms for my student. It shows “The last name and ID number combination entered does not match an existing student in the database.”.  Why can it not find my student?

A: Ensure the student ID number you’ve entered is correct.  Ensure your student’s last name is entered exactly as it’s found in the gradebook. For example, if your student has two last names with a hyphen, you will need to enter it as such in Rank One. If there is no hyphen, do not use a hyphen when entering the last name in Rank One.

Q: I have turned in a current physical for my student athlete and they were told it could not be accepted.  What form is required for participation?

A:We are often given out of state forms or well child exam forms as a physical which cannot be accepted. The UIL requires a pre-participation exam to be documented on their form.  Section 1205 of the UIL Constitution and Contest Rules states, "Standardized Pre-Participation Examination Forms, available from the UIL office and authorized by the UIL Medical Advisory Committee, are required.".  This form can be found on our Resources and Links Page.

Q: My student has transferred to another school district and needs a copy of his/her physical. How can I obtain a copy for his/her new school?

A: Irving ISD requires a parent/guardian to complete a Student Records Request form. Once this has been completed, you may contact the campus athletic trainer with contact information for your student's new school and they will send the physical.
