A History of Innovation

  • Irving ISD has a rich history of innovation. Rooted in the city of Irving, Irving ISD was founded in 1909 and consisted of single building to teach all Irving students. The district has continuously evolved its schools and resources, adapting to meet the needs of the community we serve.

  • 1909 - IRVING’S DISTRICT The district was established, and a three-story red brick building known as “Big Red” was constructed for students of all ages to attend
  • 1956 - THE FIRST STADIUM The city’s first stadium was built to house Irving ISD’s growing athletics programs
  • 1969 - IRVING NAMESAKE The Board of Trustees approved the naming of all elementary schools after remarkable individuals from the community of Irving
  • 1975 - SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF The Irving Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) was established to meet the educational needs of students with auditory impairments
  • 2000 - LAPTOPS FOR ALL The district became one of the of first in the country to implement 1:1 high school laptop programs, providing a device for every student
  • 2001 - COLLEGE AND CAREER CAMPUS Singley Academy opened and later became the first specialized campus in Irving with six programs of study and industry certifications to ensure post-graduation success
  • 2003 - DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM Two-way dual langage programs were implemented, promoting bilingualism and biliteracy
  • 2006 - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION Irving ISD was one of the first in the area to spearhead Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs at all high schools, providing students real-world experience through dedicated hands-on coursework, guest speakers, job shadowing and internships
  • 2011 - NET ZERO CAMPUS Johnson Middle School opened as the first of its kind in Texas, incorporating innovative technology while generating energy through it’s solar panels and reducing energy consuption
  • 2024 - PROFESSIONAL LEARNING & WELLNESS CENTER The Magda A. Hernández Institute of Wellness and Professional Learning opened to enhance the health and wellbeing of all staff
  • 2025 & Beyond - SPECIALTY SCHOOLS & AI PROGRAMMING New programs will launch at the Elementary and Middle School levels to offer more choices for specialized education in STEM, Leadership and Artificial Intelligence
