Dr. Robert Pierce

The best description anyone ever gave about Dr. Robert Pierce was "Irving's Will Rogers." He was a kind and gentle soul, exactly as you'd want your doctor to be, who never forgot the meaning of a house call, and who always arrived with smiles and quips in hand.

Bob and his wife, Dana, had three children-Jeff, Denise, and Craig, and 7 grandchildren. They moved to Irving in 1958.

A graduate of Southern Methodist University and Southwestern Medical School, Bob practiced family medicine in Irving for over 38 years. He also served as Chief of staff of the Irving Healthcare System.

Bob's dedication to serving the community was reflected by his accomplishments: Chairman, Western Star District of the Boy Scouts of America; Director, Irving Intervention Center; Director, Irving Schools Foundation, Past President, Irving Rotary Club; Past Chairman of the Board, Irving Chamber of Commerce; and he was the football team doctor for Irving High School for 25 years.

A past President of the Irving Independent School District Board of Trustees, Bob was elected to the Board in 1977 and re-elected in 1980. He served on the joint City/School/Community College Advisory Board. He was appointed by the Irving City Council to the Planning and Zoning Commission in 1986. In April 1987, he was elected Mayor of Irving where he served two terms. In 1995 he was elected to serve on the Irving City Council.

Bob's voluntary service in the community was noted when he was presented the Exchange Club’s Book of Golden Deeds award. The Irving chapter of the American Cancer Society presented him with the Lars Ehnesbuske Award for outstanding service to the community in 1995. He was also awarded the District Award of Merit by the Western Star District of the Boy Scouts of America. Additionally, Bob served two terms as the District Governor’s Representative for Rotary International.

Perhaps Dr. Pierce's most visible service came in his time as Mayor of Irving. During his tenure, economic development was a top priority. His tenure saw the relocation of GTE and Exxon to Irving.

Following Dr. Pierce's death in 1997 after a lengthy illness, the Irving Friendship Foundation created the Dr. Pierce Memorial Scholarship program. The scholarship is awarded for academic excellence, school and community service, and good character.
