Teenage Pregnant & Parenting Students (TAPPS) Program
-
Irving Independent School District’s Pregnancy Related Services (PRS) Program is named Teenage Pregnant and Parenting Students (TAPPS). This program provides parenting education and a variety of support services that will help school-age parents and pregnant students remain in school and experience success as both students and parents. The program is available to all school-age parents and pregnant students in any Irving Independent School District high school or middle school.
The Director of At-Risk & Responsive Services provides leadership for the TAPPS Program. Sofia Lopez is housed at Irving ISD Administrative building.
Social Workers or Mental Health Professionals, called Student Advocate Counselors are located at four high schools in Irving ISD. These high schools include: J.E. Singley Academy, MacArthur, Nimitz, and Irving. In this role, the Student Advocate Counselor is responsible for the management of the campus-based program for high school students which includes case management and support services. According to Title IX, middle school and high school TAPPS students have the option to remain at their home campus or request a transfer to Barbara Cardwell Career Preparatory Center (BCCPS). Academic and support services for TAPPS students who request a transfer are provided at BCCPC.
Social Work Interns may be assigned to provide case management and TAPPS services at the four high schools and Barbara Cardwell Preparatory Center. Our interns have undergone a Background check provided by the district and will have an Irving ISD badge. Our interns are currently seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in Social Work and have been approved to obtain their mandatory internship hours with the district. They will be supervised by the Student Advocate Counselor: McKenzie Masey.
Compensatory Education Home Instruction (CEHI) is offered when a female student's pregnancy prevents her from attending classes on campus either before or after the birth of her child. CEHI instruction is offered at the hospital bedside, or in the CEHI classroom at BCCPC. The location of the instruction depends on the individual situation and is determined by the TAPPS program staff. CEHI is offered during her maternity leave, which will last six weeks after the delivery. Instruction is provided by a certified teacher, known as the CEHI Instructor, 4 hours per week for most students. After the six weeks of CEHI instruction, the student will return back to their home campus. The CEHI instructor also provides case management and support services to the TAPPS students at BCCPC.
The Irving Independent School District is committed to providing a quality education for all students. In many situations, it is in the best interest of the TAPPS students to remain on their home campus on their regular school schedule to maximize academic achievement and ensure on-time graduation. It is expected that the pregnant student will continue her regular schedule unless medical complications prevent her from doing so.
